Hammerhead Shark Nails Beach Appearance

hammerhead-shark-on-beach

Did you hear the one about the hammerhead shark totally nailing it on the beach? No? Don’t worry because now you will. And know this. It didn’t suck. But it sure was an adrenaline rush… especially for the beachgoers having a surprise front row viewing. luck enough to be seeing in person.

This is no fish story and needs no exaggerating. It just happened at Boca Grande Pass on the south end of Gasparilla Island. It is a beautiful barrier island sitting on the Gulf of Mexico west of Fort Myers, Florida. The shark was doing its thing and splashing around before swimming off into deeper waters.

Think about where you were spending your Monday. Now try imagining being on the beach. The sun is shining. The tide is in. The waves are washing up on the shore and retreating just as quickly. And then…

Boom! Right there in front of you is a large hammerhead shark causing a spectacular scene in less than a foot of water on the very edge of the Gulf of Mexico.

Wendy Donnelly of North Port, Florida shot the video. She said they were hanging out on the sandy beach and suddenly there was the shark. Speaking of nailing it. Is it any wonder, a woman can be heard in the video saying exactly what you will be thinking when watching it?

“ Holy S^*t!”

The unique aspects of this shark sighting are because of how close to the shore it was in the shallowest water possible. However, seeing hammerhead sharks in the area is fairly common during their season in the area running from March to July.

These creatures are aggressive bottom feeders but are occasionally spotted in deep waters near the surface. Generally, hammerheads are not interested in attacking humans unless they are feeling defensive and agitated.

“Hammerhead” is a fun name. Don’t you think? In fact, I sometimes use it when driving. For example, “Nice turn signal Hammerhead!” I don’t know if the large sharks who live with that name find it funny. But we do know it is fitting because they also have a “distinct” appearance. 😊

Many people going to Rocky Point confuse the Gulf of Mexico with the Gulf of California. Despite Puerto Peñasco being in Sonora, Mexico, it is located on the northern tip of the Gulf of California. Thank goodness we have a whale migrating season and no hammerhead season there.
