It’s right in front of you. Still, I wouldn’t blame you if you missed it. Let’s give you some credit for guessing right. We Love Puerto Peñasco – Rocky Point is a Facebook Group for fans of the seaside resort town in Sonora, Mexico. Good job.
But please don’t underestimate the importance of the second word in the title. You just raised your eyes to look for it, didn’t you? That’s right.
Real love is at the heart of this Facebook group. Sure, it sounds romantic or even, corny. But more importantly, it is true. In acting on the idea and starting the group in November 2019, I wasn’t sure love would work. You could say I had more hope than confidence. That explains why as the group’s admin, I didn’t put much time or effort into growing it at first.
You see, Facebook already had groups about Rocky Point Mexico. They too were hosting an online gathering place for people of all ages, ethnicities, backgrounds, and geographic locations. Some had many members.
Think of it like #BeBest or Bust!
Despite Trump-related toxicity being everywhere online, I wanted to offer a relaxing escape. Call it a “safe zone.” After all, isn’t that how many of us view going to the beach? I think so, whether it’s in Rocky Point Mexico, California, Texas, or elsewhere.
This group would be free from posting, arguing, ridiculing, or spreading conspiracy theories about U.S. Politics. Specifically, Pro-Trump and Anti-Trump fighting and online bullying would have to be done elsewhere.
It was and still is highly toxic stuff. What was concerning to me was how easily and powerfully politics was dominating the daily content in the other Facebook groups. I just couldn’t do it. I wouldn’t. For me, I viewed it like I would be dumping hazardous materials onto the beautiful beaches of Puerto Peñasco. I didn’t want to waste my time and emotional energy. It was wrong.
My biggest fear in starting “We Love Puerto Peñasco – Rocky Point” was this:
So, what happens if I am the only one who feels this way?
I wondered how many people would be with me. It seemed there were many who really seemed to be getting off on venting their political beliefs, and trying to humiliate others. I described the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election this way. “Everybody is screaming. But nobody is listening.”
Politics turned out to be one of the reasons why the group visibility status was intentionally listed as private. My thought was protecting people so they could enjoy both their privacy and their love for this small slice of Mexican Beach Paradise.
As a result of experiencing it in my personal life, I know many of our fellow Americans can judge us harshly for liking Mexico and going there. I’ve seen my share of cynical dirty looks. I’ve heard instant arguing about the border wall, immigration, and spewing of angry opinions. And last but certainly not least, let us not forget the common misperception from those who have never even been to Rocky Point.
There is no happy ending here because we are still in the beginning stages. However, day by day, love is proving strong enough for our group to survive and grow. At the time of writing this post, “We Love Puerto Peñasco – Rocky Point” is approaching 1,000 members. It welcomes Americans, Mexicans, and anyone with a similar mind and heart.
People treat each other with kindness and respect. A practice of giving and receiving helpful information is alive and well. We laugh and we love. It revolves around one special place on the northern shore of the Sea of Cortez, and our shared love for it.
